Music
•
Entertainer (As Izzy Foreal): Bass player, vocalist, comedian, master of
ceremonies, songwriter.
•
Recording: I own a Yamaha 24-track portable recording studio that I’m not
afraid to use. In 2008 I recorded and produced an album of music (titled
Stick Grass Pudding) with Bilambil-based semi-acoustic band Paspalum.
I also have software that allows me to mix the recorded tracks, and I have the
skills for that, though I wasn’t commissioned to do so for the Paspalum
album.
•
Design: I designed the cover and label of the Paspalum CD (released
by my own independent record label, Browneye Gramophonics), and have done
that for most of the records I have released. I have also designed band posters,
flyers, etc.
•
Tutor / Coordinator, Music workshops (as Peter Knox):
Beginning in 1993, I ran various versions of songwriting & music workshops with
Port Kembla Youth Project, for youth from non-English-speaking backgrounds. The
first series of workshops culminated in the recording and release of a CD called
Living in the Shadow of a Smokestack, which featured songs written and
performed by the workshop music group. I recorded and produced the tapes for
this CD in my home studio. The young musicians involved performed live at a
launch of the CD, which I organised at the Port Kembla Community Centre. A
second series (1995) resulted in a number of songs being written, but budget
constraints did not allow for recording. A third series of workshops were the
result of funding by Council’s H.E.L.P. program, and were designed to address
barriers in basic literacy, numeracy and social skills using music as a medium.
In early 1999 I conducted similar songwriting workshops for students with
developmental disabilities at Parameadows School (Wollongong).
Drama / Writing (as Peter Knox):
• Tutor / Coordinator, Drama Activity workshops:
Because I have completed a Bachelor of Creative Arts
(Hons) undergraduate degree, in 2008 I was invited to design, coordinate and run
single-day workshops for cast members of drama productions at the Clarence
Valley Conservatorium, as well as assist with rehearsals of the productions.
Similarly, for six weeks at the end of 1993 I conducted Scriptwriting workshops
with the Roo Theatre Youth Group (Wollongong). This culminated in a one-act play
called An Episode of Conformity, which I scripted, being presented as
part of the 1993 Youth Arts & Skills Festival.
I have written and edited numerous articles, books and
anthologies.
My
other experience includes (as Peter Knox): • Research Assistant, AustLit
(Australian Literature Gateway) (University of Queensland); • Co-ordinator,
Illawarra Committee for International Students (ICIS) (Uni of Wollongong); •
Illawarra Project Co-ordinator, Food-Share Australia (community
development sector); • Community Access Support Worker, “Life Without
Barriers”, Nowra (Disabilities sector); • “Homework Buddy” tutoring,
Barnardos South Coast (tutoring primary school students having difficulty
with literacy and numeracy); • Marketing Communications Co-ordinator,
Australian Health Management (writing marketing copy, editing magazines); •
English Teacher – TAFE (In 2000 I taught the Year 12 HSC preparation
class for the Pathways program at Wollongong college. In 2001 I gave two
workshops on writing press releases to TAFE Welfare classes at Shellharbour
college); • Recreation Co-ordinator, Headway Illawarra (disability sector
