SHIRAZ
is known as Syrah in France.
Pronounced
– sher-arz and sher-ra respectively.
Syrah is the highly regarded
variety of the Hermitage and northern Rhone regions of France. In Australia it
is the principle red variety used for the production of fortified and dry red
table wines. Shiraz is one of the noblest varieties and will age majestically
for many years. While Shiraz is used to produce many mid range wines it can
produce some of the world’s finest deepest darkest reds with intense flavours
and has excellent longevity ( Penfold’s Grange).
Shiraz
is an intense black grape producing a variety wines from medium red through to
rich dark red. Young wines may exhibit a purplish colour that diminishes with
ageing.
The
nose presents peppers, spice, chocolate, liquorice, earthy, blackberry, cloves,
leathery, plum, mint, cedar, cigar, raspberry, violets, mulberry, jammy, cherry
aromas.
The
mouth or palate of Australian Shiraz is usually medium to full-bodied offering a
great deal of flavours. The abundance of fruit sensations often provides a
perceived sweetness, which is balanced by often gripping tannins. Shiraz is
often described as being full-bodied, flabby, well weighted and of long length.
The best Shiraz produces full wines of deep dark colour, full of chocolate,
licorice and fruits with hot spice and warm alcohol complimented by firm but
fine tannins. Undeniably great wines are Penfold’s Grange, Jasper Hill’s
Georgia’s Paddock and indeed excellent Shiraz is produced across Australia.
The first Carool Shiraz will be
released shortly and this will be the first Shiraz grown and produced on the
Coast. This wine will surprise and delight as it is a full bodied, generous
varietal wine.
